Cleaner Products for a Cleaner Planet

Truth be told, 10-15 years ago, I was more interested in my own health than the planet. Now don't get me wrong here, I would never litter on the street or toss my recyclables in the garbage -- I was still responsible, but I didn't think about the big picture. I used cleaner laundry detergent even back then but that was only because I didn't want to get a rash on my skin, not because of the fish in the deep blue sea. I wasn't aware of the implications to our planet -- I was ignorant.

Times have changed and both the health of my body and the planet are of equal importance to me. In fact, they are really one in the same. If the planet is healthy, this will allow us to thrive... if our waters, lakes and river and our air continues to be polluted by the products we consume then where are we going to live in 20, 30, 40, 50 years from now? We can't take Mother Nature for granted anymore. We need to think beyond our own 2 feet.

Today I'm speaking at a event with Seventh Generation. They came on to my radar a few years ago when my hero David Suzuki endorsed them as a clean company on his website -- since then, I was hooked. So when they asked me to attend this event, I was thrilled.

I wanted to share these facts with you to consider.

SAVINGS STATEMENT #1

If every household in the U.S. and Canada replaced just one bottle of 32 oz. solvent- containing all-purpose cleaner with our 32 oz. solvent-free product, we could prevent 624,000 kg of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from polluting our air.

SAVINGS STATEMENT #2

If every household in the U.S. and Canada replaced just one bottle of 25 oz. petroleum- based dishwashing liquid with our plant-derived product, we could save 151,000 barrels of oil, equivalent to removing 15,000 cars from the road for one year.

SAVINGS STATEMENT #3

If every household in the U.S. and Canada replaced just one 12-pack of 300-sheet virgin fibre bathroom tissue with our 100% recycled product we could save:

  • 2.2 MILLION trees.
  • 810 million gallons of water, a year's supply for over 6,300 families of four.
  • 5.8 million cubic feet of landfill space, equal to over 8,600 full garbage trucks.

SAVINGS STATEMENT #4

Our 4X laundry detergent comes in a lightweight, compostable, recycled and recyclable fibre shell with an innovative inner pouch that uses 66% less plastic than a typical 2.95L 2X laundry bottle – and delivers the same number of loads!

SAVINGS STATEMENT #5

If every household in the U.S. and Canada replaced just one bottle of 2.95L 2X concentrate petroleum-based laundry liquid with our 2.95L 2X concentrate plant-derived product, we could save 48 million litres of oil, equivalent to removing 30,000 cars from the road for one year.

SAVINGS STATEMENT #6

Many laundry detergents contain optical brighteners – synthetic chemicals that make fabrics appear to glow in the presence of ultraviolet light. They don't have anything to do with getting things clean and are only added to make us think our laundry is brighter and whiter than it really is.

I sincerely hope this post convinces you to stop buying that extra-cashmere-like toilet paper or harmful chemical-ridden dish soap. Think beyond your own two feet, and remember the planet.

Joyous Health to you and our planet!

I switched to 7th Generation products back in 2002 and loved using them. About 5 years ago I switched to Soap Nuts for laundry. We still use 7th Generation for dishes and the dishwasher. Home made cleaners from things like Baking Soda and Vinegar can also do a great job while lessening the impact on the Earth and our wallets.

Hi, I am trying to spring clean my home and get into more safe products. Are the seventh generation dishwasher packs, rinse aid, and hand soaps clean and safe?
