We all know the benefits of exercise, physically and mentally, but going to the gym on the regular is not always in the cards for everyone especially if you’re a new parent, a not-so-new parent with a crazy schedule, a student—the list goes on!
Luckily, there are plenty of at-home fitness programs you can do in the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule. There’s really no excuse to get moving! ;) The Joyous Team and I each come from different backgrounds in the way of at-home fitness, so we thought we’d share some of the awesome options out there, including everything from circuit training to yoga to cardio. I’m a huge fan of working out at home! This started after having a baby and realizing that commuting 20 minutes to go do a Barre class was just not feasible in my life anymore. It’s been 4 years since I started doing at-home workouts because of the convenience factor and it’s just so much easier to fit into my schedule and make it happen. Plus, I can flop on the couch when I’m done—ha!
I started out doing circuit workouts in my living room that Walker created for me. When I got bored of that and wanted more variety I discovered Obé Fitness and I’ve been addicted ever since! I love the variety of classes from HIIT workouts when I want something intense, to circuit classes and define/sculpt classes (which are sometimes a mix of pilates and light weights). Obé has made my body feel so much stronger. I also really appreciate that their classes run about 28 minutes long, so they go by in the blink of an eye. When I want something more low key, I absolutely love Boho Beautiful on YouTube. Her voice and ambient scenery make me feel so at peace. I also get a decent workout with her classes and finish feeling refreshed and joyous! I like doing her classes either in the mornings if I feel a little sleepy and need a pick-me-up, or if I need a wind-down, a class in the evenings does the trick.

For as long as I can remember, exercise has been an integral part of my life. From ranking in the top 30 Racquetball players in Ontario (yes, racquetball—way to excel in a sport with a future 😐), to pumping serious iron at lunch throughout my highschool years, movement was always an important factor in grounding myself.
This eventually led me to complete a degree in Kinesiology; after which I personal trained for 15 years, which included a stint where I opened my own boutique training studio.
So, what does this have to do with at-home workouts? Well, I’ve never been a big “class guy” and given my education, I don’t find myself needing the direction, but I 100% believe that you can get a kick-ass workout at home, with little to no equipment.
In fact, in 2014 Joy and I created a program called Eat Clean Body Lean—an exercise and nutrition program that included home-workouts instructed by yours truly. So, I guess my favourite at-home workout is my own 😃. Enjoy below—the voice over and music is SO 2014, but the workout is still killer!

I’ve started using a Fitbit, and it comes with great workouts as part of the built-in app. As a self-proclaimed data-nerd, I like working out and seeing the data right away, so the Fitbit is perfect for that (I have the Inspire HR, as it tracks your heart rate zones, too)!
When I want something more challenging and resistance training-based, I’ll jump into my Nike Training Club app, and do a quick workout. As you can tell, like most of us in the office, I love working out in the comfort of my own home. A 20 minute quick workout—even a walk—is a great way to shake up the day.

I’ve always loved going to studios and fitness classes for the community and instruction. It’s what makes me feel the most motivated; as opposed to going to the gym on my own and thinking up a routine.
I also have an autoimmune disease which can be a bit tricky when it comes to getting in the right amount of exercise or making it to a class. Too much high intensity can cause a flare, while too little exercise can increase inflammation Lately, I have been drawn to at-home workouts because I can enjoy all the benefits of a class, without having to leave the comfort of my home.
That is why when I discovered Mellissa Wood Health this past spring, I knew I had found a happy medium. Her workouts allow me to get an effective workout (you definitely feel the burn!) while not overexerting yourself.
Her workouts are based on Pilates but also incorporates yoga flows and breathwork. She also provides a new, updated schedule every week for people like me who need a little bit more guidance. What I also love is that she has a variety of workouts ranging anywhere from 12-45 minutes, so you can get in a workout even if you are strapped for time. Even just a little bit of movement can make a big difference; not only physically, but mentally as well.

In all honesty, I was never big on at-home workouts. 1) I was already paying way too much for a CrossFit membership; 2) I never thought I was someone that could get a good workout at home and stay motivated. That all changed when I took a leave from CrossFit recently to pursue more intuitive movement—as in, indulging in the form of movement I was craving on a specific day, be it yoga, walking, running or biking.
In terms of yoga, I was always very loyal studio-goer and really enjoyed the vibe. I didn’t think I could get the same benefits doing yoga at home until I came across Yoga with Adrienne. I was HOOKED! Not only are her yoga classes completely free (since they’re offered on YouTube), but I really did get that same cozy, nourishing feeling that I get from an in-person yoga class.
I love that she categorizes her classes based on what you are craving on a given day; be it to alleviate back pain, reduce stress or get a good sweat in. If you're thinking “yoga doesn't really count as a workout,” think again! I did yoga throughout last winter and got so strong in a whole different way than CrossFit made me.
