Preventing Cancer - A Nutritional Approach

Jul 20, 2009 | Joy McCarthy

This topic is worth an entire book. Fortunately there is a plethora of genius authors/doctors/researchers/nutritionists devoted to this approach and writing books about it.

I recently took a course and was very impressed with my teacher's knowledge in treating and preventing cancer with a nutritional approach. It is on my mind because I recently rode my bike over 200kms to "conquer cancer". I did it to "prevent cancer" and raise funds for my family members who are currently being treated for cancer. I believe wholeheartedly that we will beat cancer in our lifetime if and when we change our focus.

Our body is a brilliant machine that provides us with signs and symptoms when something is not quite right. Too often when something is "off" we either ignore it or take medication to relieve our symptoms without addressing the root cause. Time and time again I hear people tell me they had symptoms for years, took drugs to get rid of their various aches and pains, or sleeping pills for fatigue, only to discover years later they had some form of cancer growing (or perhaps these signs and symptoms were merely that their body was out of balance and this imbalance provided an ideal environment for cancer cells to proliferate). I constantly hear my clients tell me they started off on one drug and now they are on a cocktail of drugs for which they have no clue what for, perhaps to treat the symptoms of the previous drug - which is often the case. Are these people getting healthier? No. They are getting sicker.

I'm not saying that nutrition is the only way to prevent or beat cancer and illness, but I am saying what we choose to put in our body will either fuel cancer growth or inhibit it. There are many other factors that impact the health of your body such as environmental toxins, negative emotions, lack of quality sleep, potentially toxic pharmaceutical drugs that inhibit our liver function (ie. statins), stress and so on.

I'm going to create a new category on my website blog that I will post all my articles on this topic. I welcome any new research and resources of information.

Thought-provoking CANCER THEORIES to consider:

1. Dr. Otto Warburg was a two times Nobel Prize winner who discovered that lack of oxygen is a factor in cancer development. Every time Otto Warburg lowered the oxygen level by 35% in a healthy cell, it became cancerous. It is a well established fact that acidic bodies are essentially a magnet for disease and cancer. Acidic tissues are very low in oxygen and cancer cells love acidity. Diet has a huge impact on the pH level of your tissues as do emotions and drugs.

2. Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German biochemist who is a leading European authority on fats and nutrition. She has been nominated for the Nobel Prize seven times. She concluded from blood tests that her cancer patients were deficient in albumin, a blood producing lipoprotein needed to carry oxygen to tissues. After testing literally thousands of patients' blood, she discovered the cancer patients were deficient in Omega 3 - Essential Fatty Acids. Her approach and research in treating and preventing cancer has been focused on fats and nutrition. This begs the question - why does Health Canada not include this information in their "Food Guide for Healthy Eating"?

3. Dr. John Lee published his startling conclusions over a decade ago about conventional hormone replacement therapy posing a serious health threat to women. This can also be called "estrogen dominance". His findings touched off a storm of controversy. But years later, research has proved him right. Estrogen dominance and progesterone deficiency has been linked to cancers such as breast, ovaries and endometrium. Estrogen dominance occurs not only in women who are on the birth control pill or any such estrogen-dominant drugs, but people who eat a diet that promotes estrogen dominance in the body. There is a way to eat hormonally right to reduce your risk of cancer that anyone and everyone can adopt.

This information has been around for a long time, yet modern medicine continues to focus on searching for a cure. I agree that advances in medicine have provided us with many tools to combat disease that has helped even my family. However, I believe we need to shift our focus. We need to take the power back into our own hands and keep our money in our pockets. Next time you are given medication for a mysterious symptom, I encourage you to question why your body is out of balance and seek to address the root cause instead of feeding the multi-billion dollar pharma industry that may well be making us sicker.

We need to invest in good food for ourselves and our families to prevent and treat illness and disease in the body.

Feeback welcome and appreciated!

Joy, this article is even more brilliant than the last one!! I always get annoyed when I think about the technology that exists today and the amount of money available but the "cause" of cancer is unknown. Here's a quote from 1924: "Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar." -- Dr. Otto H. Warburg Keep up the great work.

Excellent info as always, Joy. Although guess I am a little prejudiced!! Thank you for all the love and support you give to dad and I. Due to your advice and the supplements you suggest we take (and we DO take them) you are keeping us on a great path of health and wellness. Going to be 60 next year, but feel more like 40!! Mom

Joy, what a fantastic article!! I am so glad to see that you are covering and will be covering this topic in your future posts. I am a HUGE believer in preventing things before they happen, and also in treating the root cause of the problem instead of it's symptoms... Thank you for sharing this useful information and I am looking forward to future posts on the subject. Also, if you could recommend what foods to eat more of, and which to avoid, that would really help a lot of people I am sure! =) Thanks again!
